In the first few years of this garden, we lost much of the food we grew to creatures of various sizes. The fence in the background took care of deer and discouraged bears, and the copper flashing round the greens in the front left bed worked against the massed hordes of slugs that came out every early morning and evening. We killed between 50 and 100 every day for a month, too, and that put a dent in the population. . . #deerfence #slugs #copperflashing #newgarden #gardenhomestead

Spent yesterday evening packing seeds for our upcoming Seedy Saturday on Mar 16. The advantage of working the seed packing party is that you get to do a bit of early swapping! I put in 91 packets and brought home 4, so I still have plenty of credit to use at the Swap. We swap for books as well. . . #seedysaturday #seedswap #bookswap #gardenseeds

Back in the 1990s some time, I bought Eliot Coleman’s “The New Organic Grower” and learned from it to plant onions and leeks in multi-plant blocks to save work and growing space. (I think @charles_dowding uses this method too). It worked great and I did it for years (and taught others to do it). Recently I re-read some of his other books and realised I have been missing out - there are a bunch of other things I could have been multi-planting all this time! . . #greenthumb #instagarden #gardenersofinstagram #frommygarden #organicgarden #urbangardening #gardenideas #instagardening #organicgardener #urbangardens #gardeningislife #amateurgardener #organicgardens #urbangardeners #gardening4pleasure #suburbangardener #urbanorganicgardening #gardenhomestead #urbanhomestead #homesteadgardens #backyardhomestead #vegetablegarden #vegetablegardening #vegetablegardens

Preparing the Garden in Spring: How to get your garden beds ready for spring planting

How you prepare an existing bed for spring planting depends on what state it’s in. Lots of weeds? Compacted? Mulched last fall? Let’s go over the possibilities, but first – if your beds have irrigation fittings of any kind you may need to move them out of the way so they don’t get damaged by […]

When we started sheet mulching our front lawn it caused a conversation with our neighbor, whose house you can see in the background of this pic, quite close to where we were working. She came out and watched us for a few minutes and we thought “uh oh, now we’re going to have trouble“ but no: she said “I have an old cotton rug you can have to help, if you like”, so she brought it out and laid it down, and you can see it as the pink patch on the far side. How to Start Seeds Indoors: the Best Way to Start Seeds

Many beginner gardeners think that growing their own transplants – starting plants from seed and growing them on until they are ready to plant outside – is too hard. The truth is, if you have the right equipment and information, and you start with easy vegetable varieties, it’s not hard at all. Why start plants […]
