Had a bit of a seed explosion here 😀 I taught a seed starting class last week and the loose packets and bags in front are the ones I took to that for students to plant. The tins in back are mostly half to threequarters full of more packets. Now to sort everything out, pull the ones I’ll use in the next few weeks, and pack the rest back in the tins. . . #Greenthumb #instagarden #gardenersofinstagram #frommygarden #organicgarden #urbangardening #gardenideas #instagardening #organicgardener #urbangardens #organicgardens #urbangardeners #urbanorganicgardening #gardenhomestead #urbanhomestead #homesteadgardens #backyardhomestead #containergardening #vegetablegarden #flowergarden #herbgarden #gardeningknowhow #seeds #seedsaving #seedsavers #seedstarting

We’re in the process of harvesting all the remaining Brussels sprouts. picked all the solid ones, trimmed, blanched and froze them. Next we’ll pick all the leafy ones and freeze those as greens.

Video Friday: Micro-homesteading in WA

Dee Williams used to live in a 2,000-square-foot, 3-bedroom home. Then she traveled to Guatemala (to help build a schoolhouse) and when she came home her house felt too big so built herself a home that fit.

#greetthegrower day 19: fave gardener My fave gardener who is on IG is Geoff Lawton, Australian permaculture teacher and practitioner. He provides loads of information for free, runs a very well-recommended Permaculture Design Course online as well as in person, and walks his talk on his property, #zaytunafarm . Off instagram, I’ve learned so much from: • my Mum back in the UK (5000 miles apart, our climates are so similar that we often find our gardens at the same stage) • Author and seed breeder extraordinaire Carol Deppe #caroldeppe , author of Breed Your Own Vegetable Varieties, The Resilient Gardener, and The Tao of Gardening. You can find her seeds at Fertile Valley Seeds • local Permaculture teachers Ron Berezan and Erin Innes . . #Greenthumb #instagarden #gardenersofinstagram #frommygarden #organicgarden #urbangardening #gardenideas #instagardening #organicgardener #urbangardens #organicgardens #urbangardeners #urbanorganicgardening #gardenhomestead #urbanhomestead #homesteadgardens #backyardhomestead #vegetablegarden #vegetablegardening #vegetablegardens #compost #composting #permaculture #permaculturedesign #pdc

#greetthegrower for yesterday was “goals” so, better late than never! This blue barrel has been partway to becoming a rainbarrel for several years now, and one of my goals for this year is to finish of this and multiple other garden construction projects that have been started but not finished. The barrier here is that we are in earthquake country and I want to tie this to the carport so that it can’t fall over or off it’s stand in a quake. Not only would we lose part of our water storage if it did, but a full barrel weighs about 400lb and thats not something you want jumping about! So it’s my intention to post a pic of this project DONE and finished before the end of Sep. . . #rainbarrel #rainwaterharvesting #waterstorage #Greenthumb #instagarden #gardenersofinstagram #frommygarden #organicgarden #urbangardening #gardenideas #instagardening #organicgardener #urbangardens #organicgardens #urbangardeners #urbanorganicgardening #gardenhomestead #urbanhomestead #homesteadgardens #backyardhomestead #gardeningknowhow

#greetthegrower day 11: how I learned I picked up a lot “by osmosis” as a child from my Mum, but as an adult I do most of my learning by reading and then trying things out in the garden. Usually when I read about something that sounds like it would work well for us, I’ll try it out right next to my usual method so I can compare them. Every year our garden has multiple experiments going on! I took a Permaculture Design Course a few years ago and that was very interesting, giving me a lot of new design tools and ways of thinking. I also teach a lot of gardening classes every year, and I often learn useful things from the students. It’s definitely not a one way street! . . #gardeningclasses #growyourown #permaculture #permaculturedesigncourse #pdc #gardeningbooks #learntogarden #learntogrow #gardenhomestead #gardening

Lots of people doing seed starting at the moment 😀 I’ll be starting mine next week, using this light stand that I built years ago out of 1x2s and scrap plywood. It does the same job as the expensive commercial light stands, uses commonly available 4ft shop lights (or proper grow lights) AND it folds up to store away flat when you’re not using it. If you’d like to build your own - it’s very simple - the plans are available free on my web site. #greetthegrower day 7: less glam side This is our 3-bin pallet composting area. Just off to the right is our old bathtub which made a great storage area for finished compost until I was finally persuaded to get rid of it! We’ve improved this area since, by adding an old swing set frame and hanging the sifter from it - the wheelbarrow fits neatly underneath and it makes screening the compost much easier. Here’s the tall version of the folding trellis I posted earlier, in this case set over some tall vining peas. I run strings between nails set in the top and bottom bars. #greetthegrower day 2: how you started I started as a little tyke helping my Mum in the UK in the 1960s. She grew veg and small fruit in our 16’ wide by 40’ long back garden, the old lady next door’s back garden, and an allotment down the road. It wasn’t as much fun as parents now have with their kids in the garden; ours was a “do as you’re told, and no back talk” kind of family. There was lots of weeding. However, it must have stuck, because everywhere I lived afterwards, from Uni dorm room to my current garden, I have grown things, mostly food, but also 135 houseplants in my first apartment when I emigrated to Canada in 1981. It was hard to find a pic for this! Back in the 1960s my Dad was the photog and he didn’t think gardening was interesting, so there are no pics of that, and barely any of the back garden itself. This one shows a bunch of cousins having fun at a family gathering. See the swing set on the left? And up and to the right, the patched gap in the glass “conservatory “ roof? My cousin Mary was on the swing one day, swinging energetically, and her shoe flew off. It described a graceful arc, right through the glass roof. #greetthegrower day 1: favorite thing to grow is PEAS by far. Snap, snow, shelling or soup, I love and grow them all. Many go in the freezer, but I have been known to give myself a serious stomach ache by gorging on too many at once right in the garden. When I used to grow for market, one of my best moments was hearing the “crunch” as a customer bit into a snap pea they just bought from me! . . #Greenthumb #instagarden #gardenersofinstagram #frommygarden #organicgarden #urbangardening #gardenideas #instagardening #organicgardener #urbangardens #amateurgardener #organicgardens #urbangardeners #suburbangardener #urbanorganicgardening #gardenhomestead #urbanhomestead #homesteadgardens #backyardhomestead #vegetablegarden #vegetablegardening #vegetablegardens
